Project details Freiherr von Fritsch Barracks
The former Freiherr von Fritsch barracks in the north of Hanover is to be developed into the Garden City Hanover North within the next few years. The 27-hectare site, located between the districts of Vahrenheide-Sahlkamp and Bothfeld, was abandoned 10 years ago by the German Federal Armed Forces as a location and served once again in 2000 to house police units for the Expo 2000 world exhibition. Since then the site, which has a large old park-like stock of trees, has been without any use whatsoever.
Already during the tendering phase for the sale of the site by the Federal Republic of Germany, it was the IGP’s concept to realise residential construction on the western half, consisting mainly of terraced, semi-detached and single-family houses, and to construct industrial, social and commercial buildings in the east. After development, the buildings will be seamlessly integrated into the adjacent single-family housing estates and will be able to provide this region of Hannover with urgently needed trade, social and service facilities.
After the end of military use, the site is a so-called exterior space in the interior, which must be redefined in terms of regional planning and planning law.
